A few weeks ago, I attended the farewell party for Aisha, the former director of Shades of Noir. I was surprised that she remembered me, given that we had only talked a few times. During the event, many colleagues and students shared their experiences of working with Aisha or being helped by her. Most of their encounters centered on enhancing social justice and addressing injustice within the workplace, and their stories were quite touching. To my surprise, many of these people had first learned about Shades of Noir by visiting the organization’s website.
I am glad that Shades of Noir continues to thrive even though Aisha has left. The website is particularly helpful in providing information and showcasing the organization’s stance on social justice, which establishes a sense of support and seriousness around these issues at UAL. The website covers a wide range of inclusive practices, including topics like mature students’ experiences and language minorities, which are often overlooked.1
Regarding how I would apply these resources to my own teaching practice and integrate the research in my work, I plan to refer my students to the Shades of Noir website if they struggle with any unjust treatment within the school or if they need further reading on topics covered on the site. I also plan to revisit the site myself to stay up-to-date on its contents.
Overall, I am grateful for the work that Aisha and Shades of Noir have done to promote social justice within UAL and beyond. The organization’s website is a valuable resource for anyone seeking to learn more about inclusive practices and combat injustice in all its forms.
